Why seniors should visit

Cockatoo Island is the largest in Sydney Harbour! A former imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol, it was also the site of one of Australia’s biggest shipyards during the twentieth century. Today Cockatoo Island retains many remnants of its past. Prison buildings, large workshops, slipways, wharves, residences and other buildings retain the texture of the island’s industrial history.Sleep under the shadows of dormant cranes and chimneys. Watch the sunrise over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Enjoy a barbecue as the sun sets over the Parramatta River. Cockatoo Island is a camping experience like no other.

Celebrities invited

NSW Seniors Week ambassador Tom Uren will be attending the "In conversation with Tom Uren" event:
NSW Seniors Week ambassador Tom Uren chats about his memories and the history of Sydney Harbour, for which he has been a passionate advocate for many years. Light lunch will be served. Presented by NSW Trustee & Guardian. Fri 26 March 2010, 11.30am at Mould Loft Building 6, Cockatoo Island, FREE.

Access for people with a disability

Cockatoo Island has wheelchair access and accessible toilet facilities. Most areas of the island are wheelchair accessible, though keep in mind that the island is an industrial heritage site so some of the surfaces are uneven. There is one medium incline from the lower island to the upper island.
